Demco’s ColorScape Collection is the perfect union of color and function
The trope of libraries that are full of possibility, but appear dingy, dusty, or dated is one we’re all familiar with. Libraries, after all, are often known for utilitarian storage of thousands of titles with little room — or budget — for flashy displays. However, as the library’s role in community and education spaces grows, it’s important to ensure the space is welcoming and inviting, encouraging patrons to engage and learn. One way to improve library facilities is through the use of color. Many understand that children are drawn to bright colors, but colors can also have a positive effect on adults. (Plus, adults will often go where children feel welcome and comfortable.)
Inspired, Demco designed a line of library furnishings that embrace color as much as functionality. The Demco ColorScape Collection is the result of carefully researched modular furnishings that can be configured to optimize libraries vibrantly.
ColorScape features a wide selection of coordinating products. From the first impression circulation desks to the displays, the collection adds vibrancy and energy for patrons of all ages. Color is brought in as an accent to pair with maple or oak wood finishes, and gives spaces a warm, familiar comfort, while using color to highlight details like a built-in display or a padded bench. ColorScape’s color palette can be utilized to align with school or community colors and boost school pride or reinforce branding. Different colors can also be used to define areas, such as differentiating between a children’s reading area and a teen area. ColorScape’s shelving is available single- and double-faced, in a range of heights, curved or straight, static or mobile, and can be configured with bench seating, mid-shelf displays, and more. ColorScape even coordinates with library essentials like the Demco LibraryQuiet™ Booktrucks.
One exciting aspect of ColorScape is the Playpods, which are comfortable reading nooks available in a variety of shapes. Demco even developed a custom rocket-shaped Playpod for Katherine G. Johnson Elementary School, which has since been added to the collection — making it more widely available.
“One of our elementary schools is named for Katherine G. Johnson of NASA fame, and as we talked with Demco about pieces for our library they thought a rocket might be appropriate, so they created a custom rocket reading nook for our library and it’s a very fun piece, everybody wants to get their picture taken in it, it’s been an asset to our library, and it’s so popular, it’s now in their catalog!”

Colorful library shelving and accents, like ColorScape’s furnishings, are a great way to bring personality and energy to your library without compromising on quality and functionality.
