As the school year comes to a close, it’s time to start thinking about maintaining your facilities. With so much to cover, we’ve compiled a checklist to help you keep track of maintenance and prepare for the next school year. Here are some things to keep in mind this summer:
Roof
○ Remove debris on roof or in gutters
○ Check for cracks, buckling, corrosion, and other issues
○ Check evidence of bird or rodent infestation
○ Ensure all drains and vents are properly cleared
○ Listen for any unusual noises when systems are running
Exterior Areas
○ Remove debris from parking lot and fields
○ Signs are in good condition and visible from a distance
○ Check for potholes, cracked pavement, and deteriorating paint in parking lot, pathways, and fields
○ Gates and storage areas are properly secured
○ Bleachers, fences, and playground equipment are in good condition
○ Check lights are functioning properly and replace old bulbs
○ Check cameras are functioning properly and have good visibility
○ Spray perimeter with insect repellent
Windows and Doors
○ Wipe down handles, glass, and other high-touched surfaces
○ Locks and knobs are functioning properly
○ Windows and doors are opening and closing properly
○ Check if finish, paint, caulk, etc. needs to be replaced
Bathrooms & Locker Rooms
○ Toilets and urinals are properly cleaned and work properly
○ Drains are cleared and cleaned
○ Look for drips and leaks
○ Stall doors are secured and walls are properly secured
○ Wipe down and clean handles and other high-touched surfaces
○ Check water pressure for faucets and showers
○ Check and clean any mold buildup
○ Soap and towel dispensers are working properly
Equipment & Systems
○ Check pipes for cracks and openings
○ HVAC system with vents, fans, etc. are functioning properly
○ Check room temperatures are accurate
○ Test fire/ carbon monoxide detectors and alarm system
○ Test security system
○ Lights and electrical outlets are functioning properly
○ Check boiler for any corrosion and that it’s functioning properly
○ Inspect elevators
Other Items to Consider
○ Clean mats in entryways and rooms
○ Check ceilings for water damage, mold, or loose tiles
○ Exit and emergency signage is working properly
○ Deep clean carpets, chairs, etc. in classrooms and auditorium
○ Deep clean floors in cafeteria, kitchen, classrooms, etc.
○ Check or replace fire extinguishers
○ Check AEDs, first-aid kits, etc., are up to date and ready to use
○ Check storage room chemicals and supplies are not expired or unsuitable for use
